Artist Residency, Olafsfjodur

Sitting on a bus for almost 6 hours and still some distance … We are passing mountains where milky clouds hanging down on the mountainside, brooks smoothly on one side, winding in the gravel and on the other side you can look right up into the grey sky. At one point the grey sky made it almost impossible to drive. I had during spring applied to an artist residency in the north of Iceland. I got a yes and now I’m on the way.

"Going North", sketchbook project. An image drawn from memory on the bus going north.

Reykjavik is different and all Iceland is also totally something else. It takes some days to figure out the money situation, I think 100 euro is about 13 000 Isk. The kind of chock when you first time buys a beer. Which in itself is pretty expensive. 1000 Isk sound pretty much for a beer. And yes it is, about 12 or 13 Euro.

In Olafsfjodur I met Sigge who can track his ancestors back to 780! That is unbelievable, he had kings and all kind of people running in his blood. That is cool. Sigges wife Alice took care of the residency, first evening dinner at their place with all artists.

Horses on the hillside and Olafsfjodur in distance.

Coming to Olafsfjordur after seven or eight hours on the bus, travelling on the east side of the island from south to north. Mountains with snow on the top, horses and sheep strolling along the mountainside. One white house alone on the other side. Thick deep grey fog or clouds, or whatever makes it almost impossible to drive. At the speed of about 30 km/h at the most gives you time to look around at the surroundings. If you could see anything of course… I was picked up in Aukuryri and taken by car up the last 40 km. Happy to reach my destination.

Gorgeous and still, a wonder of beauty.

Alladin and the lamp or whatever you see. The spiritual life and spirits are not odd in Iceland. You can see signs everywhere, if you can read them...

In Olafsfjodir there are two Artist Residencies. The Listhus was where I stayed and another one where three other artists lived. Listhus has a gallery and four small studios, a big living room and a nice kitchen. Listhus is a big place and we were only two guys there this first week in September. Elliot, an art student from London and me. I was there one week, Elliot stayed one month. It’s a quiet, peaceful place in the north of Iceland. Less the 1000 lives there. Most of the time I worked in my studio with drawings.

My plan was, among other things, to work with my Sketchbook project. To complete that project there pretty fast and send it. It didn’t work that way. Now two months later I still have not finished it. And it’s not only motifs from Olafsfjodir and Iceland now in my sketchbook. It turned out to be very fun to do this sketchbook thing. But also much more demanding than I thought from the beginning. I still have time to finish it. No worries. It has to be sent before 3/30-18.

I made long walkabouts some days, two or three hours walk. Up in the mountains finding a place to draw on the windy hillside. Total silence and clear air, and always the fishy smell. Elliot was gone when I woke up and still when I came back from my walk he was not still back. Not for hours. He could be out taking really longs walks, hours and hours. In the evening we made dinner or went down to our local pub.

We had one guitar and an old synt in our house, Elliot and me used to jam in the nights. Me on keyboard and Elliot on guitar. Strange, but we have like a similar destiny. We both were bass players that turned into art. We both became tired of rehearsing, compromising and funk bass. Art just took over.

Jimi Hendrix.

Since back home I been work on my Jimi Hendrix project. A role of black and white photos from his gig on Grona Lund, Stockholm, 1.9 1970. Silkscreen prints from that special old photos that my friend took back then. I’ve been thinking how to work this out for many years, and now I at least give it a try. For two months working on series of prints, printed here by me and my assistant. Now I have four motifs with many variations, about 50 monoprints and some small editions.

Time slips away. It’s now two months since I came back home from Iceland. And I’m still waiting for what the Gallery in London decide… Waiting for some other decisions also about next year.

What is decided is exhibition May 19, Artist Ecke Hedbergs Artist Home and Museum. That will be great. I will make more or less like a retrospective show with works from over 30 years. And it’s also close to my hometown. Super fun.

But now the last 6 months been like a pit-stop, reflection and catching up. And make some future plans, what to do and how. Maybe even when?
