RRthabo

Thabo and I met in Namibia last year on a Symposium out in the Namibian bush. This was the last words we said before leaving the hostel where we stayed after the exhibition opening in Windhoek and two weeks out in nowhere just focusing on art.

I wonder what can be more exciting and fun than learn to know new friends, work like hell daytime and test new things, experiment with new materials and then party every evening until you drop dead. Just to wake up next morning, just like the pig Särimner in the Viking Mythology, rise and shine.

-I will come to you in South Africa I said.

-Or I come to you in Sweden, Thabo answered.

-Then we will see who comes first, you or me, I said.

That was February last year, now we have late July 2018 and Thabo just left to go back to South Africa. We made three projects during his stay here in Sweden. Two workshops and an exhibition at Rånäs Castle Sculpture Park.

My fifth year at Rånäs. I was promised this time to show paintings, and I had my paintings already. When Thabo came we planned what to do and went to the scrap-yard a couple of times.

I had to go away for a few days to attend a book release. An anthology of sea and coast motif from my hometown. Every five years or so I use to visit the island where I grew up. We lived there every summer for almost ten years. I know every rock around that island.

I gave them five ink washes, they took three to the book.

Thabo made two wheelbarrows. He worked about ten days to make these two. The idea of making art and recycle from our over-consumption is always brilliant.

Also, we jumped out of our comfort zones. We made a big collab recycle sculpture on location.  That is a challenge. Time will tell what it turned out to be. We never wanted it to be beautiful. It was meant to be irritating, disturbing and itching. We talked about Aniara. A spaceship lost out in space, no hope just endless travel into the dark.

We also found big letters a D, two Ls, one I, a N, a S and an E. We were thinking of the word ”Lines”, what all art begins with. We finally ended up with the word" LIES” , alternative spelling, which means sometimes even lies are a cover-up for other lies. And all the fake news… But the truth, who cares anyway…?

Hope is the concept this year. The exhibition Hope of Hope is an inspiration for common action, to swope sorrow and anguish to visions and dreams says Gerhard Richter. ”Art is the highest form of hope.”   http://www.ranassalongen.se/

”Hope locates itself in the premises that we don’t know what will happen and that in the spaciousness of uncertainty is room to act.” (Rebecca Solnit)

Thabo and I also made two workshops during these days. A pool party in Alunda, where families and young people spontaneously could come to make street art, paint or make a recycle sculpture. To paint was the thing that day. A really nice happening.

The same concept two days later in Östhammar and Street Art turned people on more this time. We did some sculptures too but painting on the street connected people and everyone seemed happy.

RRÖst

The last week of Thabos stay we just hang, talked about art, and art projects, drank beer and watched the World Cup. We also made music. Recording songs, Thabos spoken words, my grooves. Just what we talked about one year ago. Maybe even someday something will be out there…

Now I am in Denmark and ArtWeek the second year for me. This time with a collection of Jimi Hendrix serigraphy. Editions, monoprints and hand colored silkscreen prints. About that, later.
